Pune India - The Oxford of the East

Pune is the second largest state of Indian state, Maharashtra. Pune known as “the Oxford of the East” for its numerous educational institutions and it is also known as “the Detroit of India” for being home to many manufacturing industries specially automobiles industry. It is assumed that the name Pune is derived from the Sanskrit word “Punya Nagari” which means “City of Virtue.” Chhatrapati Shivaji, the founder of the Maratha Empire, lived in Pune and he developed and constructed the Guruwar, Somwar, Ganesh and Ghorpade Peths. After the Peshwa rule and several wars, Pune or Poona was placed under the Bombay Presidency by the British. The city was an important social and religious movement centre in the 19th century.

In the modern times, Pune has developed itself into one of the largest cities in India harboring several IT and manufacturing companies. With its close proximity to Mumbai it is rather easy getting to Pune. Like any other Indian city, the restaurants in Pune serve with various Indian cuisines. You can also find a large number of Kolhapuri, Udupi and Maharashtraian restaurants in the city.

Being an important educational centre and industrial centre, Pune is worth visiting city of India.
